Question 1
For thousands of years, several characteristics have been consistent across human societies around the world. Animal husbandry, agriculture, and artistic expression are some of the similarities all societies share. Another similarity is the mustache. So now I mustache a question: why have mustaches had such a notable presence in human history? Humans have been shaving for as long as there has been facial hair to shave. However, it is in the past several centuries that mustaches have undergone a more creative transformation. Now, there are many different types of mustaches. The Handlebar, Pencil, and Walrus are only a few of the many types known today. With just a sharpened razor and some mustache wax, the creativity of people and their mustaches can be endless. Though the popularity of the mustache in different cultures varies over time, it has certainly influenced other creations. In the 1800s and early 1900s, mustaches were so popular that a new style of drinking cup, the mustache cup, was created. The mustache cup had a built-in covering over the top so mustaches would not be touched by the beverage. A more recent example of the mark of mustaches can be seen by the first World Mustache Tournament in 2013. The mustache truly is part of the human experience. Due to its place in the human experience, the mustache is a symbol with varied significance: power, prestige, beauty. When one thinks of mustaches, one may think of a villain from silent films, twisting the ends of his mustache. One may also think of a respected leader with a mustache of prominence. Perhaps one may think of people with famous mustaches: Tom Selleck, Burt Reynolds, and Charlie Chaplin, to name a few. No matter what one pictures when thinking of mustaches, it is clear that the mustache has a substantial effect on human perception.

This choice is incorrect as the paragraph does not make any connection between harsh voices and an individual's state of relaxation. The primary focus is on the perception of women's voices, not any particular traits associated with harsh voices.
C) Women are perceived as less appealing political candidates due to their shriller voices.
This is the correct answer. The paragraph centers around the idea that women, due to their typically higher-pitched voices, are often perceived as less desirable candidates in a political context.

The other options, which refer to men's voices, the association of voice quality with relaxation, and individual preferences or reactions to harsh voices, are not the focus of the paragraph. The paragraph's central theme is the societal perception of women's voices in political contexts.

Question 2
THE Farallon Island, or devils Teeth, as they are referred to by sailors, area group of small islands with rocky, barren terrain and treacherous, 48 km (30 miles) off the coast of San Francisco, California although the islands are small, with a combined total land area of 0.41km squared (0.16 square miles), they are positioned in a major ocean current, which enables them to house dense populations of birds, rodents seals, and other water mammals.
The abundance of wildlife first attracted Russian and American fur traders in the early 1800s, who then nearly eliminated the seal population in the area. The islands then became an agricultural resource for San Francisco during the gold rush era when egg companies began harvesting bird eggs on the islands. In 1863, violence between viral egg companies erupted on the islands (known as the Egg War") which inadvertently attracted national attention and provoked lawmakers to pass legislation to protect and rehabilitate the island's natural ecosystem.
In 1881, an executive order was passed that decreed egging illegal on the Farallon's. This ended private enterprises on the islands was reinforced in 1909 when President Theodore Roosevelt created the Farallon Reservation to restore human access and preserve that northern island, and over time many of the island original inhabitants have returned.
The Farallon's are now home to the world's largest population of western gull. Seals have returned, as well as otters and sea lions, which in turn attracts great white sharks. The combination of sharks, underwater currents, and jagged coastline are probably what earned the Farallon's their nickname "Devil's Teeth," though it hasn't stopped a few adventurous people from swimming. Four people have completed the 30-mile swim from the islands to San Francisco; the fastest person completed the journey in 14 hours.

What is the main idea of the passage?
Your Answer: Option(s)
Correct Answer: Option(s) C
Rationale
Humans disrupted the ecosystem of the Farallon Islands and played a role in restoring it.
The passage details the historical exploitation of the Farallon Islands by fur traders and egg companies, leading to significant ecological disruption. It also highlights legislative and conservation efforts that have contributed to the restoration of the islands' natural ecosystem, illustrating the dual impact of human activity on the environment.
A) The Farallon Islands are currently used as an agricultural resource for San Francisco.
This choice is misleading as it refers to past agricultural use during the gold rush era, particularly for bird eggs. The passage emphasizes the shift away from agricultural exploitation to conservation efforts, indicating that they are no longer primarily used for agricultural purposes.
B) The Farallon Islands are a dedicated sanctuary for western gulls.
While the passage does mention that the islands are home to the world's largest population of western gulls, it does not solely focus on this aspect. The main idea revolves around the broader theme of human impact—both negative and positive—on the ecosystem rather than solely the protection of gulls.
C) Humans disrupted the ecosystem of the Farallon Islands and played a role in restoring it.
This choice accurately reflects the main idea of the passage. It discusses the initial ecological disruption caused by human activities, such as fur trading and egg harvesting, and the subsequent legislative actions that led to the restoration of the islands' natural ecosystem.
D) The ecosystem of the Farallon Islands has always been unstable.
This statement is incorrect as the passage does not suggest that the ecosystem has always been unstable. Instead, it describes how human actions led to instability, followed by recovery efforts, indicating a change from instability to a more stable ecosystem through conservation.
Conclusion
The passage illustrates the complex relationship between humans and the Farallon Islands' ecosystem, emphasizing both the detrimental effects of exploitation and the positive outcomes of conservation efforts. Understanding this dual impact is crucial to appreciating the islands' current status as a restored habitat for various species, including the western gull.

Question 3
It can be difficult to write sometimes, especially if you are creating something brand new. It is even harder when you must write while following certain rules. Some writers thrive when there are limits, like sonnets or elegies; you can't just throw some words on the page and call it a haiku. On the other hand, some successful poets really enjoy breaking the rules. They will refuse to use the rules, if you can just break them and still so then what good are the rules, if you can just break them and still succeed? That doesn't make sense. I guess that is why I am not a poet.
Based on the author's supports and evidence, which of the following is a valid evaluation of the paragraph?
Your Answer: Option(s)
Correct Answer: Option(s) D
Rationale
It is an entertaining piece based on personal bias and opinion.
The paragraph reflects the author's personal thoughts and feelings about writing, showcasing subjective views rather than objective analysis. The conversational tone and rhetorical questions indicate a focus on personal experience rather than scholarly argumentation or formal critique.
A) It is a logical argument, proving that it is impossible to write well.

B) It is part of an essay discussing how poets develop their craft.
The paragraph does not serve as part of an essay on poetic development; instead, it centers on the author's struggle with writing and the experience of following or breaking rules in poetry. There is no structured analysis of poets’ techniques or their creative processes.
C) It is a scholarly analysis on the business of being a good writer.
This choice is inaccurate as the paragraph lacks the formal structure and depth required for scholarly analysis. Rather than discussing the business aspects of writing, it offers personal opinions and anecdotal evidence regarding the creative process.
Conclusion
The paragraph captures the author's subjective views on writing, emphasizing the tension between creative freedom and structural constraints. It is characterized by a personal narrative and informal tone that reflects individual bias and opinion, rather than a formal argument or scholarly exploration of writing.
